Zheng Shanzi finds himself transmigrated into a novel as the cannon fodder husband of the villainous supporting character, Yu Lanyi. The original protagonist, due to a twist of fate, married Yu Lanyi. After moving to a small county, Yu Lanyi constantly belittled and looked down upon his husband, leading to the husband’s eventual collaboration with a close friend to kill Yu Lanyi.
Now, Zheng Shanzi is caught in a compromising situation at a party, alone with Yu Lanyi in the same room. Intending to lock the main character with himself, Yu Lanyi mistakenly locks Zheng Shanzi instead. With his face partially concealed by his sleeve, Yu Lanyi glares angrily at Zheng Shanzi.
Facing public condemnation, Zheng Shanzi grits his teeth and says, “I will marry.”
Zheng Shanzi feels bitter; this person is nothing but trouble—a pampered son of a Marquis, arrogant and domineering. In contrast, he is a third-place laureate from a poor scholar background, about to take up an official post in a county. Accepting the marriage proposal means getting married in the capital before heading to the county with his wealthy flower.
Zheng Shanzi: “…Great, life is bustling and bewildering.”
…
Yu Lanyi, the legitimate son of the Marquis of Changyang, comes from a noble family. He has his eyes set on handsome, noble, and powerful young men, falling for the main character after some interactions. Attempting to create a scandal at the party by locking himself alone with the main character, he mistakenly ends up with Zheng Shanzi instead. To protect his reputation, he unwillingly marries the poor scholar.
Yu Lanyi: “But…he only came third.”
After the wedding, they must move to a remote county, which Yu Lanyi dreads, preferring comfort over hardship. Crying, he leaves the capital.
Yu Lanyi struggles with the new environment—feeling unwell on the first day, shocked by the poverty on the second, and completely dispirited by the third.
Weak and sick in bed, Yu Lanyi loses all enthusiasm, yet his dutiful husband remains energetic, occasionally checking on him without forcing intimacy.
Yu Lanyi: “???”
Gradually, Yu Lanyi discovers that his husband isn’t bad and might even be promising.
Everyone assumes Yu Lanyi’s life is doomed living in such a desolate place, mocking him, only to be proven wrong later.
…
Building infrastructure, developing their home, farming, achieving administrative success, managing subordinates, dealing with local power brokers, and becoming the top authority in the county, Zheng Shanzi experiences both pain and joy.
Zheng Shanzi affectionately calls Yu Lanyi “Beauty Yu” or “Wealthy Flower,” nicknames that make Yu Lanyi blush but no longer provoke anger as before.
